Description

A sweet and savory fall flatbread topped with balsamic caramelized red onions, fresh figs, creamy goat cheese, and peppery arugula. Perfect for Thanksgiving appetizers, holiday entertaining, or a light lunch.

Ingredients

  • Prepared flatbread or naan

  • Red onion

  • Olive oil

  • Balsamic sauce or glaze

  • Salt

  • Fresh figs

  • Goat cheese or feta cheese

  • Fresh rosemary or thyme

  • Honey (optional)

  • Fresh arugula (optional)

Instructions

Instructions

1. Caramelize the onions.
Thinly slice the red onion. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onions and cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized. If the pan becomes dry, add a small splash of water.

2. Add the balsamic.
Stir the balsamic sauce and a pinch of salt into the onions during the final few minutes of cooking. Continue until the onions are glossy and richly colored. Remove from the heat.

3. Prepare the flatbread.
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the prepared flatbread or naan on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush lightly with olive oil. Slice the fresh figs into wedges.

4. Assemble the flatbread.
Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the flatbread, leaving a small border around the edges. Arrange the fig wedges on top and sprinkle with finely chopped rosemary or thyme.

5. Bake.
Bake for 8–12 minutes, until the flatbread edges are golden and crisp. Cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the prepared flatbread.

6. Add the cheese and finish.
Remove the flatbread from the oven. While warm, scatter crumbled goat cheese or feta over the top. Add fresh arugula and drizzle lightly with honey, if desired.

7. Slice and serve.
Cut into portions and serve immediately while the crust is crisp and the toppings are warm.
