- Deglaze the bottom of the pan by adding the red wine and balsamic vinegar and gently scraping the browned bits off the bottom with a spatula.
- Add the broth, bay leaves, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and sprigs of fresh thyme. Season with additional salt and black pepper, if desired, and stir to combine.
- Increase heat to high and bring to a rapid boil, then immediately reduce heat to medium-low. Loosely cover the skillet with a lid and simmer, stirring occasionally, for two hours.
- Remove from heat and discard the thyme stems and bay leaves. Divide the soup between four large oven-safe ramekins or bowls. Top with slices of the Gruyère cheese, followed by the freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
- Place the top oven rack in the second position from top and set the broiler to high.
Arrange ramekins on a large, rimmed baking sheet and place on the top oven rack. Broil until the cheese is melted and golden brown, approximately 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and serve immediately garnished with a few fresh thyme leaves. Enjoy!
Variations
If you are looking for variations when making Gluten-Free French Onion Soup, the sky is the limit! Depending on the type of soup you would like to make, consider adding ingredients such as cubed potatoes, bacon, different cheeses like Mozzarella or Provolone, and fresh herbs like chives or parsley. If you're feeling adventurous, use sweet onions instead of yellow onions to give your gluten-free soup a sweeter flavor. Finally, for an elegant touch, finish off your soup with a sprinkle of white truffle oil on top. With variations like these, you can create your own version of gluten-free French Onion Soup that is sure to tantalize everyone's taste buds.
Storage
Storing gluten-free French Onion Soup in the fridge is a great way to enjoy it for days after making it. The soup can be kept up to five days in the refrigerator, as long as storage instructions are followed correctly. Keep in mind that storage conditions and proper storage containers help determine how long the soup will remain fresh. Proper storage includes placing the soup in a tightly sealed container, allowing for minimal oxygen exposure. It's also important to cool down freshly cooked food before storage, such as French onion soup, so that it does not reach temperatures that could promote bacterial growth. So make sure you follow storage guidelines, and your delicious gluten-free French Onion Soup should last up to five days in your fridge!
Top tip
When making gluten-free French Onion Soup, top tips to keep top of mind include ensuring all of the ingredients used are certified as gluten-free, such as the spices and seasonings. Additionally, always use a gluten-free stock in place of regular beef or chicken broth. If using diced onions, be sure to take care in peeling them and make sure not to cross-contaminate with any wheat products. Choose a good quality soup base that is also labeled as gluten-free; this will ensure a thick and creamy consistency without compromising on flavor. In terms of garnishes, try using crumbled gluten-free crackers instead of traditional croutons for added crunch!
Note:
This recipe uses slices of Gruyére cheese for visual effect. To create the stringy, chewy goodness found in classic restaurant-style French Onion Soup, use equal amounts (3 oz. each) of coarsely grated Gruyére cheese and Mozzarella instead of the Gruyére and Parmesan used below. [end notes]
Tip: To prevent cracking, don’t place ramekins or bowls too close to the broiler if you don’t know their temperature rating. Keep a close watch while broiling to prevent over-browning.
This rich and delicious recipe takes some time to come together. However, the results are well worth it. The richly caramelized onions and slowly simmered broth are incredible.
