Banana Cream Yogurt offers a delightful combination of flavors and a host of nutritional benefits. This creamy and luscious treat begins with the natural sweetness of ripe bananas, which not only adds a delectable taste but also provides a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, and vitamins B6 and C. The addition of yogurt brings a tangy and smooth texture, while also contributing probiotics that promote a healthy gut. These beneficial bacteria support digestion and boost immune function. Furthermore, the yogurt's calcium content helps promote strong bones and teeth. Ingredients needed to make Banana Cream Yogurt
2 large bananas
½ c. plain Greek yogurt, full fat
6 oz. cream cheese cut into chunks
¾ T. real vanilla extract
¼ c. honey, preferably local
Optional Toppings:
Fresh banana slices
Shredded coconut

Note: Regular vanilla extract will affect the color of this dish. To prevent this, choose a clear vanilla extract instead. However, be sure to read labels carefully because most clear extracts are imitations.
How to make Banana Cream Yogurt
- Peel and cut bananas into thin slices. Place banana slices in a plastic freezer-safe bag and place in the freezer until frozen.
- Add yogurt, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and frozen banana slices to a powerful blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth. (If necessary, add 2-3 tablespoons of water to the blender to loosen the mixture).
- While blending, drizzle in honey until thoroughly combined with other ingredients. Once blended, taste the mixture and add more honey, if desired.
- Transfer the contents of the blender to a freezer-safe dish and cover tightly. Place in the freezer for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight.
- To serve, remove from freezer and let sit on the counter for 5-10 minutes to soften. Scoop into individual chilled serving dishes and garnish with slices of fresh banana or other favorite toppings.
Variations on the Banana Cream Yogurt recipe
- Toppings: Sprinkle some crunchy granola, chopped nuts (such as almonds or walnuts), or toasted coconut flakes over the yogurt to add texture and flavor.
- Fruit Variations: Instead of using just bananas, consider adding other fruits to the mix. Sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or diced mangoes can complement the banana flavor and provide a burst of freshness.
- Sweeteners: While the natural sweetness of ripe bananas is often sufficient, you can sweeten the yogurt further with honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or a sprinkle of cinnamon for added flavor.
- Nut Butter Swirl: Incorporate a swirl of your favorite nut butter (such as almond butter or peanut butter) into the yogurt to introduce a creamy, nutty element to the recipe.
- Greek Yogurt: Instead of regular yogurt, you can use Greek yogurt for a thicker and creamier texture. Greek yogurt also adds more protein to your snack.
- Chocolate Banana Twist: For a chocolatey twist, mix in some cocoa powder or chocolate protein powder into the yogurt before blending it with the bananas. This creates a delightful chocolate-banana flavor combination.
- Coconut Banana Delight: Add a tropical twist by blending in some coconut milk or shredded coconut along with the bananas. This variation provides a creamy and exotic taste.
- Spiced Yogurt: Enhance the flavor by adding a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to the yogurt. These warm spices pair well with the banana flavor and offer a cozy twist.
Storage for the Banana Cream Yogurt
Homemade banana cream yogurt can be stored in the refrigerator for about 3 to 5 days. However, the exact shelf life may vary depending on factors such as the freshness of the ingredients used and the storage conditions.
To maximize the yogurt's freshness and quality, it's important to store it properly. Here are some tips:
- Use airtight containers: Transfer the banana cream yogurt to a clean, airtight container before storing it in the fridge. This helps prevent the absorption of odors from other foods and minimizes the risk of contamination.
- Keep refrigerated: Ensure that the yogurt is consistently stored at a temperature below 40°F (4°C). The refrigerator's cool environment slows down the growth of bacteria, helping to maintain the yogurt's freshness.
- Avoid cross-contamination: When serving the yogurt, use clean utensils to prevent introducing any contaminants that could shorten its shelf life.
- Visual and sensory check: Before consuming the stored banana cream yogurt, inspect it visually. If you notice any significant changes in color, texture, or smell, discard it to avoid consuming spoiled yogurt.
It's worth noting that homemade yogurt may have a shorter shelf life compared to store-bought yogurt, as it doesn't contain preservatives. So, it's generally recommended to consume the yogurt within a few days to ensure optimal taste and quality.
Top tips to know when making Banana Cream Yogurt
- Ripe bananas: Ensure that your bananas are ripe, preferably with brown spots on the peel. Ripe bananas are sweeter and have a softer texture, which will blend more smoothly into the yogurt.
- Pre-chill ingredients: For a refreshing yogurt, chill the bananas and yogurt before blending. This helps maintain a cool temperature and prevents the yogurt from becoming too thin.
- Blend in stages: If you're using a blender or food processor to combine the ingredients, start by blending the bananas alone until smooth. Then add the yogurt gradually and continue blending until you achieve a creamy and well-incorporated mixture.
- Adjust consistency: Depending on your desired consistency, you can add more or less yogurt. For thicker yogurt, use less yogurt or strain the yogurt to remove excess liquid. If you prefer a thinner consistency, simply add more yogurt or a splash of milk.
- Flavor balance: Taste the yogurt after blending and adjust the flavor to your liking. If it needs to be sweeter, add a sweetener like honey or maple syrup. If you want a tangier taste, consider adding a squeeze of lemon juice or a pinch of citric acid.
- Chill before serving: After preparing the banana cream yogurt, refrigerate it for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld together and the yogurt to firm up. Serving it chilled enhances the taste and texture.
- Storage: If you have leftovers, store the banana cream yogurt in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for a few days, but it's best to consume it within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.
- Customize toppings: Add toppings just before serving to maintain their crunchiness. Consider adding fresh fruit slices, a sprinkle of granola or nuts, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup for added texture and flavor.
Remember, these tips are meant to guide you, and you can always adjust them based on your preferences. Enjoy your homemade Banana Cream Yogurt!
